AiryLight is a kinetic light that displays realtime local air quality data through the patterns it projects on the ceiling above it.
It tracks the amount of particulate matter in the air (PM2.5) by scraping various well-regulated local realtime sensors that provide consistent air quality data.
That data is interpreted in a range - from 0 PPM, very little particulate matter (measured in parts per million) to 100 PPM, considered unhealthy. Above 100, we get into ranges deemed hazardous.
These data ranges are represented through a spectrum of 3 patterns:
1st State: Air Quality from 0 to 40 ppm: A simple, small light pattern - things are good - nothing out of the usual.
2nd State: Air Quality shifting from 40 to 60: More defined, focused patterns call your attention to the transitional midway between good and unhealthy air quality.
3rd State: Air Quality shifting from 80 to 100: Large, complex pattern - we are nearing unhealthy air quality - the historical maximum of 100.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Annelie Berner creates and teaches about experimental interaction design - with a focus on data visualization. Currently working as an Interaction Design Researcher at CIID and a member of NEWINC where she is working on a variety of client projects as well as developing a kinetic light that visualizes data.
"I try to make meaningful objects and digital experiences, show stories and surface information in simple, thoughtful ways. I hope that daily moments of intrigue through objects such as AiryLight can propel us to pay attention to issues we might otherwise overlook.
I enjoy the intersection of concept, design and technology, weaving in different parts that make up a whole."
